Hi Happy New Year to you all. When my car has warmed up and the engine is at idle .The re counter is constantly moving up and down.( To its normal idle position) It moves up and down by around 1/ 3 mmm.The car is running on Petronix ignition.Do you have any idea what might be causing this.? It has been happening around three months The Petronix was fitted maybe a year ago.Regards Nigel.

did you also change power resistors and ignition coil? You should check which voltage amplitudes your old ignition and your Pertronix ignition delivers to rpm counter.

Hi Norbert.YesI did but with a new standard Bosch coil .Today I tried a Blue Beru coil which I have run with in the past ok.Although the issue seemed to be slightly worse with the Beru.Would what I mentioned have an effect on the general running of the car ? I just wanted to check if this might be my ongoing slight feels like intermittent misfire I'm getting.before stripping the injection to replace the bottom and middle seals Unfortunately for me I'm rubbish with electrical testing unless I call a professional to check.Regards Nigel.

2. Ignition coils are not selcted by color. They have electrical values and they often need power resistors to work properly. Coild and resistor must match. You change voltage level on primary coild side. Your rev counter wants to see original amplitudes.

Hi Volker.Sorry for the muddle up of names.My car has never had a visible ballast resistor .If this is what you mean.I know the earlier versions had it mounted on the coil. As far as I know ( which is not much) I don't think either coils are high performance versions.As I'm getting this slight miss with both coils .can I assume these are not the issue.and is more likely to be an air leak at the injectors? it seems that there were different versions of ignition coils. Up till 6/73 Bosch had supplied a coil and power resistor. After that it was without.

Which coil no. do you have?

Hi Volker.Yes being a 1975 car mine does not have a separate ballast resistor.I will have to do some digging to try and find there model numbers.but I can tell you I drove to Germany with the blue Beru coil in place in 2015 with no problems although at that stage I was running Luminition ignition was not long after that trip and 20 years started to give problems hence my switch to Petronix.Thank you Nigel

Hi Volker.The Beru coil now on the car is ZS106 .0040100106.I also have a new Bosch 0221119027 K12V .I forgot to mention I have a while ago fitted rear LED side lights + boot and bonnet interior lights + some instrument lights .These are quility lights that run cool.and from a UK specialist.However there is a slight flickering of the rear side lights and front lights ( which have the original type bulbs) when the engine is running ! The rev counter still does its jumping with all the light off. Regards Nigel

Bosch gnition coil 0221119027 is wrong for your car. You should have 0221119021 or ...016 . The 027 needs a power resistor in BMW 1500-2000 series. I cannot comment more as I can currently not open my microfiches and check. I recommend that you verify Bosch Classic  what would be correct coild for you.

Interesting that they say you need a power resistor on that coil 0221119021 too if you have transistor module. Pertronix is one like that. So one should be able to read that green label on coil. Because they do not tell the reistor value.

You can also check BMW 1500 - 2002 there to check which resistor they use on your coil.

What I remember now:

A coil is built for a limited number of sparks per second. A 6-cyl engine needs more sparks than 4-cyl engines. Maybe that is the difference.

Hi Volker I'm getting confused .easy at my age ha ha.Ive just emailed Bosch Classic to see what they say.but forgot to mention the Petronix but the coil you said is the correct version.which seems to cover the whole E 3 range maybe is ok as the 3.3 lia cars run transisderised ignition.Nigel

Hi Volker you are correct the Bosch coil is for 4cylinder up to 2 litre engines.Bosch Classic confirmed and the correct coil is the one you mentioned and needs a ballast Resistor of 0.9 ohmn They did not know if this set up would be ok with my Petronix.You think it should be ok ? Am I correct in thinking that a cable should be added to the 2 ballist connectors and then each end of the cable go to Plus and minus on the coil ? Regards Nigel.

that would destroy your Pertronix. This power resistor must be serial not parallel in line from Pertronx to coil. It will reduce the voltage on your coil.
