The AAV is removed from the engine block and a blanking plate fitted, the ports on the inlet manifold are also blocked of blocked so currently it is not contributing to the air leak and as not present allows the idle throttle adjustment . If you can direct me to the article on repairing the AAV I will attempt to fix it. It is currently soaking in lubricant. I am smoke testing the inlet for leaks today.

Hi Rob,

as it is soaking in lubricant, please never ask me to look at it. It does not help and it only creates a big mess when one opens such an AAV.

Viele Schraubergrüße - best regards, Dr-DJet Volker

No problems I will not ask you to fix it . The AAV now moves however not sure of the operational parameters that said when it is fully closed (heat gun) mouth suction can result in very small air movement (loss of suction) when  fully open  (ice water)there is a 2-3 mm triangular aperture that air can move through.

The smoke test identified air leak from behind the TPS plate. On removal there is very little play in the shaft however from a forum search I believe there should be a felt seal there. I made one up and refitted TPS , no leak. I was now able to get idle speed to 800rpm  (originally 2000) with both the correct position for the throttle stop and opening the air needle valve under the intake slightly. I was also able to adjust the timing to 10 BTDC at 800 rpm. So all looks good for the  minute. Will continue other work on the car sanding and polishing the paint ( I resprayed it after replacing rusting panels) and fitting a new headliner. Once it looks good I will go back and correctly tune the car after reading chapters 1-14 thanks for the website. Just to reiterate the smoke test there was no other leaks detected only at the back of the TPS plate from around the  throttle shaft repaired with a felt seal. Rob
