How to adjust MAP sensor was created by braveheart
MY 1974 BMW 3.0CSi ran well for 10 years, then one day when I started it up it would hardly idle. I suspected the MAP (type 2) and sure enough it would not hold a vacuum. I sent it out to be rebuilt, reinstalled it and engine still runs poorly as before. I have checked everything else as recommended but nothing is helping. Engine runs very unevenly, very smoky, no backfiring, responds to the accelerator but it can't be driven. I suspect the MAP is not correctly adjusted and would like to try adjusting it to get the engine running smoothly again. Can this be done (I have read Jetronic's Chapter 4)? Thanks for any help.

Hi Unknown,

where did you get it repaired? And is it colorless, blue, red or green version that you got adjusted? Which diaphragm was installed? I heavily recommend not to try to tune yourself. TUning is sensitive and I have seen too many MAP sensors completely detuned. You have warranty so go and ask for proper service from your supplier.

Thanks Volker.
The MAP was rebuilt by Fuel Injection, Inc., Tracy, California as recommended by E9coupe.com. The old MAP (no color) would not hold a vacuum so I presume  FI, Inc. rebuilt the whole thing. They said the rebuilt MAP was set to 18 in/Hg, 12in/Hg and 0 in/Hg. They will make adjustments to fix the over-rich at idle problem if I send it back to them which I am planning to do. I hope they are able to adjust it correctly to get my engine running again. It seems like a haphazard way to make an adjustment...how many times will I have to send it back to get it right? (that's a rhetorical question...)

Hi Bill,

I have seen another example from a Fuel Injection Corp. labeled MAP sensor that was not very promising to say it politely.

Hi Bill,

did they ask which version your BMW ECU is? They should so that they know which vcolor version to provide for your MAP sensor (see chapter 4 for pairing). My opinion: Either a company knows what they are doing or not. If they really say that they will now decrease a bit after your complaint it sounds not very professional to me.

They didn't ask about the ECU...that confirms my suspicions that rebuilding/replacing the MAP without referencing the ECU is probably a waste of time. I will send the MAP out to them anyway to see if their adjustment improves anything. Either that or it's back to carburetors.
Thanks for your input, Volker!
