Hallo,

:OKAY: :woohoo:

while remembering our friend althase who died last week and invented those replacement cams for trigger contacts / points I have produced my own lot now and successfully stress tested them and myself. :OKAY: :woohoo:

My new cams were tested in oven at 100°C for 15 minutes and then I wanted to install them on my old trigger points of my 450 SL. That's when I had to recognize that old cams are mounted by stell rivets. When removeing those with a drill, I managed to slide off and drill tinto my thumb. OUUUUUCCCCHH and lots of blood   :Help:

Finally I inserted 2 cams into an ignition distributor (MB V8) and ran them constantly at 1500/min for 4 days until I finally couldn't stand the noise any more. 3000/min engine revolutions correspond to 100 km/h to 120 km/h, meaning 2400 to 2880 km a day resp. 10'000 to 11'500 km in 4 days. That was enough to judge wear. And that was successfully matered. Wear was roughly 0.1 mm meaning that cams would stand roughly 50'000 km with these replacement cams, enough for a whole classic car life. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: But I can only know exactly if someone has driven them for 50'000 km while greasing them and avoiding rust on distributor shaft. Well and then you can still tune them with Norbert's gauge.

Ja, Volker - genau so.

Norbert

Hi Urbi,

unfortunately my replacement cams and shafts do not fit VW and Porsche. But they fit all other trigger contacts for 4 and 6-cyl engines and 8-cyl anyhow.

Reason is that VW trigger contacts housing is flatter than other trigger contacts. My replacement shafts do not fit in VW / Porsche distributor.

Sorry for that.

Hi Urbi,
I don't agree with Volker in full...
I think you COULD replace the cams without problems.
Volker says, his 'special set' for replacing the bolts isn't useable at the VW-units. That's true...
but I think, it's possible to replace the cams and just remove the washers that are not really needed.
I have two arguments:
- Ignition-points in almost every case don't have such a fixture. They are hold in place by the spring only.
- I own an early unmodified VW unit that doesn't have such a fixture, look at the photo: The left unit doesn't have a fixture.

But I don't think you have to replace your cams. <Send us a good photo, we can evaluate this...>
With cams that are worn out by not more than 0.5 mm till total misfunction, still 2 mm remaining, I think the replacement is superfluous. Readjusting is sufficient.
This is not a car tire that gets worse when wearing out profile, but a switch that switches at a defined - adjustable - cam position. It doesn't matter whether the top of the cam is already a bit worn. Adjusted to the original values, the trigger unit will work like a new unit again.

The claim to be found in the Internet that the rivets would grind on the camshaft of the distributor if the cams are worn too much is wrong.
Anyone who uses my tool - which simulates the camshaft-ground - could see that this is not true, cannot happen at all because the rivet can never reach and touch the camshaft.

Set your points using my tool to the value I specified, and with a sensible lubrication with breaker-points-grease, this will run as long as a new one again until you have problems with it.
It doesn't matter whether the contact amboss lever is a bit wrong. The injection time is just like a new unit.
There is no wear and no load on the electric contact like at the ignition beaker-points.

Regards
Norbert

Hi Norbert,

I agree to disagree!

There is a reason why Bosch went from the easy mounting to keeping it in place with washers. And yes it is true that one cannot install my new shafts with snap ring as it gets too high in total for the opening in VW distributor. To be honest I have been asked only once for that.

However I still have some new VW/Porsche trigger points and I can share one with you.

Thanks Norbert for the advice, I’ve already adjust the point (both to 140 degrees), I was asking for new cams for the future when they are worn out completely
I think now they are adjusted they will last for many years

So it’s a pity I’ve don’t took a picture when I had taken them apart, now is everything rebuild and it’s working fine

My trigger point looks the same as the left ones on your picture, do new points fit on that one?

And what would be the price of new ones

Hello, "Gebiss" experts.

You’ve got my attention now.

1) What is the best methode for removing a, b, and c? Or is that a trade secret? That’s fine, too!

Best, Marc

Hi Marc,

no secret - I just drill both sides out and replace the shaft with a new and better designed one that resembles the shaft of 8-cyl trigger points.

Hi Volker,

Do you happen to have a photo handy of your "better designed" shaft attached to the steel frame? A photo from above and one from below would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Greetings Marc
