280SEL transistor problem was created by dnadanny1
Hi there. The ignition system of my 1972 280SEL 3.5 D-Jetronic is contact point plus transistor. There is no condenser at contact point, but I saw there should be one on the wire diagram.
My question is:
1) Should I get myself one condenser for the contact point?
2) what are the difference between with condenser and without one?

Appreciate your reply and comments. Thanks!

The capacitor is not needed in a system with transistor . It could get defective and make problems. Should better stay removed.

Hi Danny.

capacitor in breaker controlled transistorized igniton TSZ-k is a historic tribute to normal battery ignition. In battry ignition it was needed for extinguishing the spark between contact. That was necessary to prevent to much burn-off of contact.

In TSZ-k we do not have such a spark on contact as it dows not switch ignition coil but only the transistor in ignition module. To the opposite: The capacitor is rather harmful. It prevents the ittle bit of spark that cleans contacts. It can rather start to have blue oxidation and you need to clean them.

BUT : You should use a green primary cable WITH shield to prevent noise in radio or other EMC effects.

Thanks both for your help! I understand that the transistor is not necessary. Just out of curiosity and to understand better about my car, what will be the consequence if I install the transistor into the system instead? Appreciate your knowledge!

Capacitor is not needed. Transistor is highly recommended !
