XJ12C MAP Sensor was created by nioumane
Hi all,

my name is Olivier, living in Paris, and I own few classic Jaguar.
My appologies if I don't publish this message in the right place.

Quick question here :
On a XJ12 Coupé (serie 2 - 1975), can I combine a Map sensor Lucas 2PS 73140A with ECU 3CU 83477B (instead of 83356A) ?
Or said in a different way : Is there a difference between Map sensor 2PS 73140 (I've got a brand new one) and 73163 (used, in place) ?

Thank you very much for your help.

Olivier.

Hi Olivier,

yes both MAP sensors are different and you should combine as I describe in chapter 15 of my compendium . What year of make is your 2PS 73140 ? You can read from upper right rivet's 3-digit stamp.

thank you so much for your quick reply.

My concern is that the 73163 which is in place is not supposed to be mounted on this car (my engine number is before 7P. 31112), that's why I went for 73140.

Let me also explain the issue I have for months now:
the car starts well when cold, then begins to lose power after 10min (when the engine starts to warm up a little bit). At this point, the engine can stall sometimes as the iddle seems to be lower.
I usually wait on the side of the road for half an hour, trying to restart, successfully or not.
Then suddenly, when the engine is warm enough, it works well again.
If I leave the car for a few hours to cool down, it will work fine.
If I wait a couple of days, it's messy again.
Water and air sensors have been tested and works fine.

The car went to the mechanics a couple of times for this and according to them, it was just an engine settings.
They adjusted it, and seemed to work, until I realized after a few days it wasn't the case.

I'll check the stamp asap.
Until then, could you please elaborate on the difference between both MAP?
Is there a big difference or can it be bypassed by adjusting engine's trims ?

thanx for help.
Olivier.

Hi Olivier,

curves are very different. Early 0 280 100 063 create a much richer mixture than 0 280 100 068 . I might have a 0 280 100 068 MAP sensor but I would have to check. You cannot adjust engine to cope with that.

What you describe does not sound like a MAP sensor problem - even if you have wrong one. Your MAP sensor would create high fuel consumption and black spark plugs but not a stalling engine. You should rather start to verify what happens when power goes down:
  1. Mount a fuel pressure gauge and verify whether fuel pressure is then wrong. If necessary connect a long hose and glue gauge on windshield.
  2. Use a stroboscope on cyl 1 to verify whether ignition goes wrong.
  3. Only when you are sure of the first 2, try to search failure on D-Jetronic. It would then be good if you could feel whether injectors are pulsed during failure to start engine.

thanx a lot for these explanations.

My feeling is the mixture is too rich (too much fuel and/or not enough air... and it smells fuel sometimes) which is increased during the warm up, making the power loss and engine to stall. This is probably why I struggle to restart the engine (which might be drowned)

Fuel pressure has to be checked, definitly... but ignition line is brand new.
I'll let know the mechanics.

For now, I assume I have an expensive and useless 0 280 100 063 :(

Will keep you posted on this.

Thanx again.

Hi Olivier,

which date is stamped on it. If it is from 70s I might be interested to swap a 0 280 100 068 with you.
