Ignition Distributor was created by Suprared89
Good day everyone! I am a new member with a 1972 280SEL 4.5.
I made the mistake of removing my distributor with no marking. I have timed and installed a few times and still not right. The car runs VERY rich and misfires badly. I took it out again and retimed. Now it will not start at all. I hear injector pulse and have spark. timing must be way off, hear popping through intake.
The car ran great before i removed distributor. Can someone please help. I need instructions and maybe pictures of how to set timing and install distributor.
Thank you/

Hi,
but where is the Problem, it´s the same procedure at nearly every car :
you turn the crankshaft to the TDC Position, the cams on cylinder 1 must show to the top and then you insert the distributor with the finger showing to the mark on the housing´s edge.
Afterwards correct the timing with the stroboskope.

Hi,
and after mounting in this position, adjust dwell according to table (where your distributor Bosch no is listed) and then firing point with an ignition light like Equus 5668. I prefer these digital ones as they are brigth and you can adjust to anything before TDC and just need to read 0° TDC on shaft marking.
Remember to set at given rpm and then verify vacuum adjustment and verify readings at idle, 1500/min and 3000/min.

Gentlemen,
Thank you for all the assistance and information. After going through everything.... It turns out that the brand new Bosch W7DC spark plugs I installed had 3 that were defective. I installed New NGK plugs and VOILA! It fired up and ran well.
THANK YOU ALL!
